The DuPage County Health Department reminds residents that it is time to "spring forward" and change the clocks forward an hour on Sunday, March 9, 2014. Residents are also urged to take advantage of the extra hour of daylight by adding some healthy habits into their lives.

  • To help you adjust more easily to the time change, try to wake up earlier over the weekend.

  • Use the extra hour of daylight in the evening to go for a walk, begin your gardening when the weather is a little warmer or begin a new outdoor hobby such as golf or tennis.

  • When you move your clocks forward one hour, it's also important to check or change the batteries in your smoke alarms.

  • Drive defensively on the Monday after daylight savings time as many people lose an hour of sleep resulting in a 17% increase in traffic accidents, according to a study by the University of British Columbia.

Most importantly, when you are feeling a bit more tired on Monday after changing the clocks, stay positive and remember that summer is on its way!
