With the earliest subzero weather in 18 years, and no warm up in sight, the DuPage County Health Department is encouraging residents to be prepared for cold weather so they can stay safe and warm this winter. Below are some tips on how to weather winter and stay safe and healthy all season long.

Prepare yourself and your family for extreme temperatures.

  • For Your Car: Prepare a winter emergency kit to keep in your car in case you become stranded. Include; blankets, food and water, flares, first-aid kit, sand or kitty litter for traction and a cell-phone charger for your car.  
  • For Your Home: Be prepared for weather-related emergencies like power outages. Keep extra batteries in the house, stock up on food and water before winter storms and keep an up to date first aid kit.
  • For working/playing outside:
    • Wear layers of light, warm clothing; mittens; hats; scarves; and waterproof boots.
    • Cover your head. You lose as much as 50 percent of your body heat through your head.
    • Wear mittens rather than fingered gloves. The contact of your finger can keep your hands warmer.
    • Cover the areas of your face most susceptible to frost bite like the ears, nose, chin and forehead.
    • Cover your mouth with a scarf to avoid inhaling extremely cold air which can hurt the lungs.
    • Avoid hot caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. They can cause your body to lose heat rather than warming you up.
    • People with heart disease or other medical conditions should check with their doctors before exerting themselves outside in the cold (shoveling snow)
