Young athletes hear inspiring message

Tue September 1, 2015

More than 3,600 participants heard an inspiring message last month from a dynamic speaker who talked about the importance of young athletes making healthy lifestyle choices. The DuPage County Prevention Leadership Team (PLT) partnered with the Glenbard Parent Series to bring in John Underwood to address parents, student athletes, coaches of student athletes, and PLT coalition members.

Underwood addressed the PLT in August with an overview of how alcohol, cannabis and other drugs effect brain chemistry. He also discussed the importance of sleep and nutrition for youth.

All four Glenbard high schools heard a 30-minute presentation at their fall athletic meetings, which are attended by parents and students. Students participating in fall sports and clubs were mandated to attend along with a parent. Presentations reinforced the code of conduct with evidenced-based research on how substances will inhibit athletic performance.

Approximately 100 coaches from DuPage County attended a two-hour training in August on human performance. Coaches were empowered with data, strategies and resources to help athletes prepare, train, perform and recover to achieve their full potential. Thanks to the Marquardt Center in Glendale Heights for donating its beautiful space for this event.

Underwood is a former National College Athletic Association All-American runner, coach of Olympic champions and consultant for U.S. Navy Seals. He offers insight to young athletes on how to perform at the peak of their ability. He also presented up-to-date information on how alcohol and other substances affect the body and brain of an athlete.
