1. What foods does WIC provide?

Women and children may receive:

• Cheese, tofu, or yogurt
• Eggs
• Fresh fruits and vegetables
• Iron-fortified cereals
• Juice
• Legumes (dry peas, beans) or peanut butter
• Milk (cow’s, lactose-free or soy)
• Whole grain options
  • Brown rice
  • Oatmeal
  • Soft corn tortillas or whole wheat flour tortillas
  • Whole grain bread or buns
  • Bulgar

Women who are breastfeeding exclusively may also receive tuna fish or pink salmon, as well as extra calcium rich foods, juice, and protein rich options. Newborns who are not breastfeeding receive formula and, starting at 6 months of age, will receive infant cereal and infant baby food.

2. What kinds of breastfeeding assistance do you provide?

The Health Department offers WIC-certified lactation consultants (IBCLC), counselors (CLC), and breastfeeding peer counselors (BFPC) on staff who are available to provide breastfeeding support. WIC has a dedicated place to breastfeed your infant and can assist you in getting your own breast pump.

3. What do I need to bring to an appointment?

Bring the following to your first WIC appointment:

• Identification
  Examples:
  • Driver’s license
  • Photo ID
• Proof of address
  Example: utility bill or recent mail with dated postal stamp
• Proof of birth
  Examples:
  • Birth certificate for your infant or child (hospital or legal)
  • Crib card
  • Shot record
• Proof of income
  Examples:
  • Paycheck stubs
  • Income tax form

4. How long will my appointment take?

Appointment times vary. Please allow one-to-two hours, depending on the size of your family. You may bring a beverage and snack from home.

5. What will happen at my appointment?

After reviewing your health, medical, and nutrition history, a dietitian, nutritionist or public health nurse will share health and nutrition information and answer your questions. You will receive up to three-months of food benefits.

6. Where can I use my WIC benefits?

You will get a list of WIC food vendors that accept EBT card, a shopping list and a WIC food list.

7. What if I lose my WIC EBT card?

WIC can replace your EBT card. Please use your BNFT app to lock benefits and notify your local WIC office.

8. When can my infant start solids?

WIC follows the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines, which recommend infants start solid foods at 6 months of age.
