FACTOIDS

Apply a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of
15 or higher at least 30 minutes before going outside.
Reapply after swimming or playing.
Secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of
preventable death and kills 53,000 nonsmokers in the
United States each year. Smoke contains more than 4,000
chemicals including 40 that cause cancer and aggravate
asthma.

A freight train with 100 cars traveling at 55 m.p.h.
will require at least 1 mile to complete an emergency
stop.
If boating, be sure everyone wears a personal flotation
device (life jacket). Don’t boat in bad weather or near
swimmers and water skiers. Always let someone know where
you’re going and your expected return time.

In a thunderstorm, seek shelter at once in a building or
car. If you are outside, do not take shelter under a
tree. Avoid open water such as lakes or pools. Put aside
metal items you are carrying.
Party Safely with Peachy

Peachy Keen wants to remind everyone to be safe while
entertaining family and friends. Impr oper storing,
cooking and serving of any meal
can lead to the growth of harmful bacteria like
salmonella, which can cause foodborne illness. Whether
you’re planning a birthday party,
holiday gathering or a barbecue, you can be sure it will
be a healthy celebration with these tips from Peachy
Keen.
Keep Hot Foods Hot! Use a food thermometer to help
ensure that the meal is fully cooked. Eat the meal as
soon as it is prepared. Also, reheat all leftovers to
165ºF (again, use your food thermometer). Gravy should
be brought to a rolling boil.
Keep Cold Foods Cold! For leftovers, refrigerate them
immediately by cutting the meat off the bones and
storing it in
shallow containers in the refrigerator.
Keep It Safe! Finally, wash your hands and all knives,
cutting boards and utensils with hot, soapy water before
and after handling raw meats and before eating.
