Well and Septic Permit Application Process

Prior to applying for a permit, investigation of the property to determine suitability for a septic system shall be conducted by the property owners. Septic system design is based on a percolation test result and anticipated volume. Please read our information regarding percolation tests (Soil Percolation Tests, Application Procedures For Percolation Tests).

The following explains the necessary steps for permit approval.

  1. Submit a completed and signed application (Application for Permit for Private Water Supply, Application for Permit for Private Sewage Disposal Facilities), 7 copies of the well and septic design or 4 copies of a well only design done on a topographic plat of survey, one set of building plans (they will be returned to you), and the appropriate fee to:

    DuPage County Health Department
    Environmental Health Services Central Office
    111 North County Farm Road
    Wheaton, IL 60187
  2. The plans are reviewed, including a site evaluation of the property to begin the process. Septic field and designated expansion area (if shown) must be roped off prior to permit approval.
  3. Plans that are approved are issued and stamped with a permit number and returned to the applicant. Contractors should only work off of stamped plans. Plans that are rejected are returned with a letter.
  4. All permit inspections are scheduled through the public health center stamped on the plans. A final inspection on your well and/or septic permit is required prior to approval for occupancy. The well and septic contractors are not responsible for this inspection. Note: All clear water wastes (sump pump discharge water, high efficiency furnace discharge, central air condition condensate, etc.) and water treatment equipment backwash must be directed away from the sewage system.
