WIC NUTRITION PROGRAM
What is WIC?
WIC stands for Women, Infants and Children. It is a supplemental food program
that provides nutrition information and free foods to help mothers, babies and
children get the nutrients they need for proper growth and development.
Am I Eligible for WIC?
YES!
If you:
- Are a pregnant woman;
- Are breastfeeding (up to one year after
giving birth);
- Are a parent, guardian or caretaker of
an infant or child younger than 5 years of age.
If your income:
- Is within WIC guidelines (you may have a job
and still meet these guidelines).
If you are:
- Screened by a WIC clinic and found to have a
medical or diet health risk.
Your First Visit to a WIC Clinic
At your first visit to the WIC clinic, you will need to have:
- Proof of income - last two paycheck stubs,
income tax forms, Public Aid card or Food Stamp card.
- Proof of residency - example: a recent utility
bill or piece of mail dated within the past 60 days.
- Proof of birth for infants and children -
also, you must bring children with you to the clinic.
Your WIC agency may ask you to bring additional
information and/or a form of personal identification. After your first visit,
your WIC agency will give you instructions for future visits. Attendance at
Nutrition Education classes is a required component of the program.
WIC Food Instruments
WIC provides Food Instruments for supplemental foods such as iron-fortified
infant formula, milk, eggs, cheese, juice, cereal, beans and peanut butter.
Typically, a three-month supply of Food Instruments is issued at one time.
