Vision and hearing screening clinics for
school year 04-05
Purpose
Vision
The purpose of the vision screening is to identify children who may have a
possible vision problem that would require a professional eye examination.
Impaired vision in children can seriously affect learning and can contribute to
the development of emotional and behavioral problems.
Hearing
The purpose of the hearing screening is to identify children who may have a
potential hearing problem. Students who fail our screening are referred for a
medical evaluation. The Illinois Department of Public Health defines the failure
criteria. A hearing impairment interferes with development of normal speech and
communication, which can also lead to educational failure. Early detection and
proper medical treatment insures a better chance of successfully correcting the
hearing problem.
Referrals
Children who have failed vision screenings on two separate occasions are
referred for a professional eye examination. On rescreen day, an audiogram
or threshold hearing test is performed for the children who failed their initial
hearing test. A medical evaluation is recommended for children who meet the
referral criteria. The families can select a doctor of their choice. Parents can
call their pediatrician or their medical insurance for a recommendation to a
doctor who would fit their needs.
The majority of our screenings are administered in the public, private and
parochial schools, as well as early childhood facilities and preschools. We
offer office appointments usually on a monthly basis at our Public Health
Centers located in Wheaton, Addison, Lombard and Westmont. To schedule an
appointment at one of the public health centers, please call 682-7979 ext. 7676.
