Parachute Games

Grades PreK-5th Grade

Students will participate in different educational games using our parachute. Not only will participants be active during this program, they will also be learning about the importance of physical activity and good nutrition. Parachute Games provides students with three different games:

1) Food Find: In this game, students will learn about Go, Slow and Whoa foods by having to crawl underneath the rippling parachute, find a food, and place it in the proper bucket. Once each student has had a turn or all the pictures are sorted, the Health Educators will review the students work.

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Students will understand what Go, Slow and Whoa foods are
  • Students will be able to identify foods that represent Go, Slow and Whoa foods
  • Students will be active throughout this game

2) Parachute Pyramid: In this game, students will become food pyramid experts. Each color on our parachute will represent a different food group. Music will start to play and the students will ripple the parachute up and down. When the music stop, students will throw the parachute up into the air, run clockwise and catch the parachute again before it hits the group. The Health Educator will call out a color. The student or students holding that color will need to crawl under the parachute and find a food that represents that food group. For example; a student holding on to the red portion of the parachute will need to find a food representing the fruit group.

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Students will become familiar with all of the food groups on the food pyramid
  • Students will be able to categorize various foods into their appropriate food groups
  • Students will be active throughout the this game

3) Parachute Basketball: This game will again address Go, Slow and Whoa foods. This time, we will have 3 students be the bucket holders. One student will represent the Go foods, another will represent the Slow foods, and the third student will represent the Whoa foods. All of the other participants will be rippling the parachute which will have one ball in the center. The Health Educator will call out a food, either a Go, Slow or Whoa food. Students will then need to determine which bucket they think that food should go in. Once the students decide on which bucket to shoot for, that bucket holder will be ready to try and catch the ball that the participants "shoot" for.

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Students will understand what Go, Slow and Whoa foods are
  • Students will be able to identify foods that represent Go, Slow and Whoa foods
  • Students will be active throughout this game
