TAKE IT TO HEART—AEDS SAVE LIVES

Mon June 24, 2013

Start The Heart (STH), an  initiative launched by the DuPage County Health Department in 2010, has placed 189 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in DuPage County communities, but has more available through the Community Hero Program.

If any group purchases two AEDs, the Health Department uses Community Hero funds to donate a third AED to an organization which cannot afford an AED. The Community Hero funds come from a $148,500 federal grant secured by U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam in 2010.

Start The Heart's mission is to reduce the number of deaths due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), the leading cause of death in DuPage County. The use of AEDs and cardiopulmonary resuscitation are proven methods to decrease the number of deaths caused by SCA.

Start The Heart is currently working with Metra and the Parent Heart Watch organization to place AEDs in other DuPage County locations.

STH has trained nearly 700 persons through either in-person or online training covering AED usage and CPR.   An in-person training session is planned in Lombard in late July. STH training is available to community groups and over 150 persons can be trained in a three-hour session.

The online CPR training is brief and is designed to teach people what steps to take until first responders arrive. To view this video visit: http://www.dupagehealth.org/cprtraining
