Saturday sessions for people who have quit smoking scheduled in spring
The DuPage County Health Department has launched a Saturday support group for smokers who need additional motivation to quit-and stay quit. The support group will start at 10:30 a.m. on April 4 and meet on Saturdays twice a month at the DuPage Convalescent Center, Room 2800A, 400 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.
The sessions are open to the community. People who get support increase their chances of quitting successfully by about 50 percent.
Support group members can also sign-up for Smoke Free Solutions a free seven-week stop-smoking course, held weekdays at various locations. The cessation course uses a positive behavioral change approach that teaches smokers how to become nonsmokers for life. Participants learn how to develop personalized quitting plans, deal with recovery symptoms, control weight, manage stress through relaxation techniques and fight those urges to go back to smoking.
Quitting is hard and sometimes means starting over a few times, so having the right support, is important. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that smoking cessation classes combined with a group support and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) increases success for quitting. According to the American Lung Association heart attack possibility decreases within 24 hours of quitting, lung function increases 30 percent after three months, and risk of heart disease is cut in half after one year without smoking!
The health department's Tobacco Prevention and Control Program is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the community. To register for Smoke Free Solutions, learn about other locations, dates and times call the (630) 682-7400, ext. 7044. Classes are free and any community member who would like to quit smoking is invited to attend.
