Health department offers Walk-In Clinic, Express Visits
The DuPage County Health Department is reemphasizing the need for educating, testing and treating DuPage residents for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) following the release of 2007 Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The report shows reported cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea in the United States exceeded 1.4 million in 2007 and continued increases in syphilis.
It is estimated that more than half of all new infections with chlamydia and gonorrhea continue to go undiagnosed, underscoring the importance of increased screening. If left untreated, up to 40 percent of chlamydia and gonorrhea infections in women can result in pelvic inflammatory disease - a condition that causes as many as 50,000 women to become infertile each year. Untreated chlamydia or gonorrhea can also cause ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain and other serious health problems.
Syphilis, a disease close to being eliminated as a public health threat less than a decade ago, has increased each year since 2000.
The health department offers screening for these infections at the Central Public Health Center located at 111 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. A Walk-In Clinic is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Services include a confidential examination with a physician, diagnosis and treatment.
Additionally, appointments for an Express Visit are available for clients who report no signs or symptoms of infection (for example, no itching, burning, rash, pain, etc.). Beginning Jan. 16, Express Visits are available by appointment only from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. Express services include a nurse consultation and testing only. Treatment is provided if indicated.
Fees range from $30 to $60. Call (630) 682-7400 to schedule an appointment or for more information.
