Health Department reminding residents about Norovirus precautions

Wed November 17, 2010

DUPAGE COUNTY- The DuPage County Health Department wants to inform residents that with the discovery of the Norovirus in the County, they should take the proper precautions to protect themselves and their families.

Norovirus, which is very contagious, can spread person-to-person via the consumption of contaminated food, ice or drinks. Contaminated environmental surfaces, such as door handles or stair rails, are also other sources of potential exposure.

Characteristics of the illness include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. A headache or low-grade fever may also be symptoms. Onset of the illness is usually 10 to 50 hours after exposure. The illness may last one to three days. A person who experiences Norovirus is susceptible to more than one case of the illness. Norovirus organisms can survive on surfaces for up to 12 days.

The Health Department recommends residents take the following precautions:

  •  Always wash your hands well before preparing and eating food and after using the bathroom.
  • Do not expose others while you are ill. Stay home until symptoms have subsided for 24 hours.
  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces immediately after an episode of diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Flush or discard any vomitus and/or stool in the toilet and make sure that the surrounding area is kept clean.
  • Immediately remove and wash clothing or linens that may be contaminated with feces or vomitus (use hot water and soap).
  • Clean and sanitize areas frequently touched by others.
  • Always wash fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water.
  • When sharing food such as nuts or unwrapped candy use utensils to take the food rather than bare hands.
  • Keep areas where you prepare food clean and sanitized.
