DUPAGE COUNTY--DuPage County public and private agencies and organizations are combining forces to promote and offer HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) testing at a community forum on Friday, June 25, in recognition of National HIV Testing Day.
The DuPage County Health Department, Serenity House and the Mosaic Initiative are working together to encourage individuals to "Lead by Example: Know Your Status" at the event, which will be held at Serenity House, 891 South Rohlwing Road, Addison. Free HIV testing will be available on June 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided and a panel will discuss the need for HIV testing as well as local resources at noon.
The National Association of People with AIDS started National HIV Testing Day in 1995. Every year, around June 27, local organizations across the nation engage with communities to promote early diagnosis and HIV-testing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 250,000 of the one million people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States are unaware of their status. With early diagnosis, uncertain individuals will know their HIV status and be referred to appropriate treatment and care.
Locally, individuals may be tested for HIV through a number of options including the DuPage County Health Department, doctors' offices and home-test kits.
