DUPAGE COUNTY- In recognition of National Influenza Vaccine Week (Dec. 5-11), the DuPage County Health Department is reminding residents there is still time for them to get their annual flu shots. Residents can visit many locations throughout DuPage County for flu shots, including Dominick's and Osco Pharmacies and Central DuPage Hospital Convenient Care Centers.
The Health Department partners with Dominick's, Osco and CDH each year to make it easier for DuPage County residents to get flu shots in their neighborhoods. A coupon for a $5 gift card if you get a flu shot at Dominick's or Osco can be printed from the Health Department's web site, www.dupagehealth.org
This is the first year that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months and older receive an annual flu shot. This year's vaccine protects against three different flu viruses, including the 2009 H1N1 strain. People at high risk of serious influenza complications, including young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease, and people 65 years and older, should make getting vaccinated a priority. Children younger than nine who have not been vaccinated for influenza in the past will need two doses of the flu vaccine.
This year the DuPage County Health Department has been concentrating on giving flu shots to individuals without access to flu vaccine through traditional means. The Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Illinois Care Van was utilized to vaccinate day care workers who care for young infants, as well as low-income parents/family members with new babies who are unable to be vaccinated due to their young age. Flu clinics were held at the Health Department, as well as the DuPage Community Clinic, DuPage PADS and continue at the People's Resource Center twice weekly during food pantry hours.
In addition to the getting the vaccine, remember these easy steps that help stop the spread of the virus, which we call "The Three Cs:"
