DUPAGE COUNTY-"Start The Heart," a DuPage County Health Department initiative dedicated to saving the lives of residents afflicted by Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), was launched as a pilot program on Thursday by the Health Department, U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam and the Village of Lombard.
Statistics show that SCA is the leading cause of death in DuPage County. However, by increasing the use of AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) within the first seconds of a SCA attack that number can be dramatically reduced.
Start The Heart has two primary goals:
Increase the use of AEDs throughout DuPage County.
Increase the number of individuals trained in CPR.
"I am pleased to be a part of the Start The Heart campaign, an effort that will help spread the training and equipment local residents need to provide lifesaving emergency care in the case of sudden cardiac arrest," said Congressman Roskam.
Working with the DuPage County Health Department and the Village of Lombard, Congressman Roskam secured $148,500 in federal funding to assist in the purchase of AED and CPR Anytime Kits.
Village of Lombard President William Mueller said Lombard is excited about being the launch community in DuPage County for Start The Heart. "This initiative will save lives in Lombard and there is nothing more important than that," said Mueller.
Maureen McHugh, Executive Director of the Health Department, said this initiative is based on partnerships and more communities will be added soon so that Start The Heart will reach every corner of DuPage County and help save lives in every community.
