DuPage County Health Department Achieves National Accreditation Status

Fri June 20, 2014

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) proudly announces that it has been awarded national accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). This achievement indicates that DCHD has met or exceeded national standards for the highest quality of public health services, leadership, value and accountability.

In order to receive accreditation, DCHD had to undergo a rigorous multi-faceted, peer-reviewed process to ensure it meets quality standards and measures. DCHD is one of the first among 3,000 health departments nationwide to receive this recognition.

"I commend the entire staff and leadership for their hard work throughout the long process of working toward accreditation," said Linda Kurzawa, President of the DuPage County Board of Health. "This recognition further proves the incredible efforts and commitment of the agency to protect and improve the health of DuPage County residents."

The two-year process toward accreditation included extensive document submission, review of programs, policies, procedures, and day-to-day operations. A two-day site visit in early March included an extensive peer-review process and interviews with the Board of Health, community partners, and DCHD staff from across the agency.

"By achieving accreditation status, our health department joins the top one percent of health departments in the nation to reach this gold standard of public health," said Karen Ayala, Executive Director at DCHD. "This recognition conveys to the community that our health department is a top performer and is meeting the public health needs of those we serve and striving for continuous quality improvement."

Launched in September, 2011, PHAB is the nonprofit organization that administers the national accreditation program for health departments nationwide. PHAB is jointly funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. PHAB's Board of Directors is comprised of seasoned public health practitioners, researchers, and leaders working to achieve standards of excellence in public health across the nation.
