DUPAGE COUNTY-February is "American Heart Month" and the DuPage County Health Department is reminding DuPage County residents that they should understand the risks of heart disease and stroke, as well as learn how they can protect themselves and their loved ones.
Most of us know someone who has had heart disease or stroke. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States; one in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke, equal to 2,200 deaths per day.
Heart disease and stroke affects all of our lives, but we can all play a role in ending it. Prevention starts with everyone. Protect yourself and your loved ones from heart disease and stroke by understanding the risks and taking these steps:
Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in DuPage County and that is the reason that the DuPage County Health Department created its Start The Heart initiative to train more people in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
This free life-saving training was offered in conjunction with the Village of Lombard in 2011 and more than 300 persons were trained. There are plans to expand this training to other communities in 2012.
To learn more about the Health Department's Start The Heart initiative, call the (630) 682-7400.
