DuPage County Health Department Statement on Seoul Virus

Thu February 2, 2017

DuPage County Health Department is currently participating in the multi-state investigation of Seoul virus infections reported among several persons associated with rat-breeding facilities.

In consultation with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), DuPage County Health Department recommends persons with potentially infected rats should not sell, trade, release, or co-mingle their rats and are advised to hold their rats in place. "Potentially infected rats" include those that have been linked to facilities identified by public health agencies during the investigation.

Owners of all rats should follow safe animal practices from CDC. Visit: https://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/pets/small-mammals/petrodents.html).

DuPage County Health Department made recommendations to operators of events that include rats with regards to the safe handling of rats. For any questions, please contact DuPage County Health Department at (630) 682-7400.
