DUPAGE COUNTY--The DuPage County Health Department received the Director's Recognition Award on June 16 at the 2010 Illinois Public Health Emergency Preparedness Summit in Oak Brook.

Dr. Damon Arnold, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, presented the award to Maureen McHugh, Executive Director of the DCHD, and George DeTella, Chief of the Office of Risk and Emergency Management at the DCHD.

"This award," McHugh said, "is a direct reflection on the commitment of Health Department staff and a credit to the pandemic flu preparations and staff training that we began in 2006."

Arnold said DCHD "has been an exemplary leader in the area of emergency preparedness and response. It was the first in the state to implement a Comprehensive Emergency Management Program, moving to a paperless, electronic system to more efficiently and accurately share plan information and provide documentation."

"The DuPage County Health Department," he added, "was also instrumental in planning for a large, full-scale exercise involving neighboring states and 18 counties, thus demonstrating the positive impact of regional planning and collaboration in urban settings."

Further, Arnold said, the DuPage County Health Department's response to H1N1 influenza "was a stellar example, using the national Incident Command System structure and being able to reach into the community to protect residents with more than 100,000 people receiving H1N1 vaccine."

"The key elements utilized in our response to the H1N1 flu," McHugh said, "included tracking of absentee rates in DuPage County schools with an electronic reporting system, hiring temporary employees to assist with vaccine distribution and contracting with a professional call center to make appointments for residents, which greatly helped with efficient management of flu shot clinics."

McHugh added, "We are grateful to the DuPage County Board of Health, Dr. Darlene Ruscitti, Superintendent of the DuPage County Regional Office of Education, and to many others for helping our agency meet the needs of DuPage County residents during the H1N1 outbreak."
