What are cockroaches?

Cockroaches are medium sized to large sized insects. They are broad, flattened insects with long antennae and a prominent pronotum. They are nocturnal and run rapidly when disturbed. The most common are German, American, and Oriental.

  • German have dark brown stripes on back of head
  • American are reddish brown
  • Oriental very dark and can't fly

Where are they found?

They are found in cracks and crevices and in warm, moist areas.

  • German Cockroaches-are the most common indoor species, especially in multiple family dwelling. They prefer food preparation area, kitchens, and bathrooms. This is because they like warm, humid areas that are close to food and water.
  • American Cockroaches-are most common in large urban buildings near water pipes and grease traps, sewage pipes, etc.
  • Oriental Cockroaches-Mainly found outdoors during warm weather.

Reproduction

  • German Cockroach-Produce 4-8 egg capsules in her lifetime. Each capsule contains 30-40 eggs. Each capsule takes 28 days to hatch.
  • American Cockroach-Produce 1 capsule a week until 15-90 capsules have been produced. Each capsule has 14-16 eggs. Capsules hatch 50-55 days at room temperature.
  • Oriental Cockroach-Produce an average of 8 capsules. Each capsule contains 16 eggs. Capsules hatch in 60 days under room temperature conditions.

Prevention

  • Remove sources of food and water, i.e., cleaning spills, pull all equipment out and clean sides
  • Storing food in containers
  • Seal all cracks and crevices
