Sealants

Nearly 90% of children's cavities occur in the deep pits and grooves of the molar teeth.

While fluoride significantly reduces tooth decay on the smooth surfaces of the teeth, sealants prevent cavities in the molar grooves.

Sealants are a plastic resin which is applied to the tooth's surface. When in place, the sealant covers the deep pits and grooves of the tooth and protects it from the harmful bacterial plaque, which may cause tooth decay.

Activities

1. Review the sealant fact sheet and have children identify the difference between sealants and fillings in their mouths.

2. Have children draw a tooth diagram and label the areas sealants protect.
