Leading Causes of Death in DuPage County, Illinois

Introduction
For more than a century, leading cause of death measures have been used to
describe the health status of the Nation.1 This report presents 1999
data on the leading causes of death in DuPage County. Leading causes of death
for Illinois and U.S. residents are also presented. Ranking causes of death is a
common method of presenting mortality statistics. Leading Causes of Death
reports approximate the risk of death from a specific condition. Most of the
data presented in this report will be proportional data and will be expressed as
a percent of total deaths. Some data will be expressed using cause–specific
death rates per 100,000 population. Where possible, DuPage County data will be
compared to Illinois data.
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has developed a uniform
procedure for ranking cause of death. Using the International Classification of
Diseases (ICD) coding structure, 113 selected causes of death were consolidated
from the entire ICD coding structure. Of these 113 causes a subset of 50
rankable causes were selected to rank deaths for individuals older than one year
of age. A subset of 71 rankable causes of death was selected for infant deaths.
The rankings denote the most frequently occurring cause of death among causes
eligible for ranking.
