Leading Causes of Death in DuPage County, Illinois

Healthy People 2010

Healthy People 2010 (HP 2010) is the nationwide public health agenda. It provides a roadmap for health promotion and disease prevention to improve the health of all people in the United States. There are 28 focus areas and 467 objectives within Healthy People 2010. These objectives focus on broad issues of health and well-being, and especially the proven determinants of health. There are 25 cause-specific mortality objectives developed for HP 2010. Targets for these objectives have been articulated, and are expressed as age-adjusted death rates per 100,000 population. The list below includes the HP 2010 mortality objectives that relate to the top ten leading causes of death for DuPage County residents . As a result of the changes in the coding structure (from ICD-9 to ICD-10) in 1999, all baseline data for DuPage County will need to be recalculated. When this is complete the appropriate 1999 baselines for DuPage County residents can be established using ICD-10 coding.

  • Reduce the overall cancer death rate to 159.9 deaths/100,000
  • Reduce coronary heart disease deaths to 166 deaths/100,000
  • Reduce stroke deaths to 48 deaths/100,000
  • Reduce deaths caused by accidents to 17.5/100,000
  • Reduce the suicide rate to 5 suicides/100,000
  • Reduce deaths from chronic lower respiratory disease among adults to 60 deaths/100,000
  • Reduce cirrhosis deaths to 3 deaths/100,000

There are many ways to measure the health status of the community. Using leading causes of death measures for a population provides a valuable picture of health status. It is also essential for monitoring the affects of certain behaviors, environmental factors, and social conditions that contribute to mortality. Nationally, about 19 percent of all deaths can be attributed to tobacco use, 14 percent to diet and activity, and 5 percent to alcohol use. These determinants of health are likely to have caused more than half of all deaths nationally, in Illinois, and in DuPage County.
