THE PROBLEMS

43.8% of Illinois traffic deaths are alcohol related.
42% of preventable injuries are motor vehicle related.
Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 cause of unintentional deaths.
Unintentional injuries are the #1 cause of death of children ages 1-4.
Head injury is the leading cause of death in bicycle crashes.
Nationally more than 1,800 children are killed and 280,000 injured as
motor vehicle passengers.

IN DU PAGE COUNTY DURING THE PAST 12 MONTHS

86,923 (13.2%) adults and 6,319 (2.7%) children did not regularly use seat belts
77,713 (47.0%) children did not regularly wear bicycle helmets
28,316 (4.3%) adults drove drunk/944 each day
49.2% of admitted drunk drivers were between 18 and 29 years of age
34,242 (5.2%) adults rode with drunk drivers
210,503 (30.6%) adults had not checked their smoke detectors
