DuPage County Health Department
Observes national HIV testing day on June 27
The DuPage County
Health Department is observing National HIV Testing Day on June 27 by
reminding residents that free testing for HIV antibodies is offered by the
AIDS Program at several locations.
Free and confidential testing for HIV antibodies is now available by
appointment at the following times and locations:
Weekdays and evenings
West Public Health Center
111 North County Farm Road, Wheaton
First
and Third Thursday evening
East Public Health Center
1111 East Jackson St., Lombard
Second
and fourth Thursday evening
Southeast
Public Health Center
422 North Cass Ave., Westmont
HIV antibody
testing is also offered during testing through walk-in sexually transmitted
disease (STD) clinics held at the Wheaton location on Mondays and Wednesdays
from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Syphilis, gonorrhea and Chlamydia are tested through
this clinic as well. The fee for this clinic is $50. Cash, checks, Master
Card or Visa are accepted.
During the week of June 27, walk-in HIV testing will be made available at
additional health department sites. For information, call the AIDS Program
at (630) 682-7400.
The federal Centers
for Disease Control estimates that there are 250,000 people in the United
States who are unaware that they have HIV infection. Many of them do not
consider themselves to be at risk. Studies show that people who learn they
are HIV positive are more likely to adopt safer behaviors thereby reducing
transmission to others. Testing can lead to earlier diagnosis, more
effective therapy and prolonged life.
