COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES

In order to assure an effective response to a bioterrorism threat, Community Health Services developed a Medication Distribution plan that outlines how antibiotics could be distributed to DuPage County’s more than 900,000 residents.

A bioterrorist surveillance plan was developed for the detection and reporting of suspected or confirmed bioterrorist agents. The plan expands on the existing surveillance system of contagious or infectious diseases, and is designed to assure a coordinated response with the county’s emergency plan and health care resources. Staff has also been trained to respond to an outbreak of smallpox.

CHS entered into a grant agreement with Advocate Health Care, financed through the Community Memorial Foundation, to run the Healthy Steps Program. This program works with pediatric physicians to improve delivery of health services to young, low income/high risk families.
In response to growth in the Women, Infants and Children Program, the program was completely redesigned and provides more individual attention and reduced waiting. The Department of Human Services awarded the WIC Program with the “Loving Support Breastfeeding Award,” recognizing the highest breastfeeding duration rates.

The HIV Counseling and Testing Program was given an exceptional score during its Illinois Department of Public Health review last fall.

Rotary Clubs in Wheaton (AM Chapter) and Lombard donated funds to the Health Department, which were matched by Rotary International, to assist in providing immunizations and educational materials to low income families.

The Christina’s Smile Dental Trailer again visited the Health Department in July and 121 children were selected from the Health Department’s Sealant Program for the equivalent of $45,000 worth of free dental care.

As a result of the Tobacco Grant last year, CHS was able to fund completion of a CD of tobacco prevention and control songs. The materials are available to DuPage County schools.
