Behaviors

Laying the foundation for the next decade means Surveying Behaviors that Impact Health.

How long has it been since you saw your doctor? Or dentist?

Did anyone advise you to quit smoking?

Do you feel you should cut down on your drinking? Do you drink and drive?

Do you have a firearm at your home?

Do you have health insurance?

Do you wear your seat belt while driving or riding in a car?

Have you felt blue or down during the past month?

These are some of the questions that were asked of adults in over 1,500 households in DuPage County early in the year in order to complete the Behavioral Risk Factor Survey 2000. The telephone survey was conducted through random digit dialing by Metro Chicago Information Center.

The DuPage County Health Consortium commissioned the survey that yielded nearly 400 pages of data on how residents view their own health, whether they have their own healthcare provider, and what (if any) behaviors present a health or safety risk. The consortium consists of the DuPage County Health Department, the six hospitals in DuPage County: Central DuPage Health, Edward Health Services, Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, GlenOaks Hospital/Adventist Health System, Good Samaritan Hospital/Advocate and Hinsdale Hospital/Adventist Health System, and the Community Memorial Foundation.

“Completing the Behavioral Risk Factor Survey is essential to the work of our Health Department,” said Dr. James C. Hagen, Deputy Executive Director and Director of Planning, Education and Evaluation. “It is a vital component of the three core public health practices – assessment, assurance and policy development.
