Planning for the health needs of
our residents often involves
identification of areas of special concern, and partnering with other providers.
In 1999, one area identified was West Chicago. The Health Department had been holding Childrens Clinics in a West Chicago school for some years. When that space was no longer available, discussions with other providers were held and a small group was formed to brainstorm. Discussions expanded beyond finding a new location for Children’s Clinic. There were concerns about lack of transportation, language and cultural barriers, and access to care.
“It was soon apparent that our small group was highly motivated,” said Mary Lally, Family Health Unit Manager for the Health Department’s Community Health Services Unit. “Our search for a new clinic location turned into discussion of strategies to improve the overall health and well being of West Chicago residents. The opening of the Health and Education Center in West Chicago is a wonderful example of a community process. We believe the Center will have a very positive impact on the community.”
The Health and Education Center is a collaboration among the Health Department, Central DuPage Health, the College of DuPage, Pediatric Health Associates and West Chicago Obstetrics.
As a partner, the Health Department offers public health nursing, well child services, WIC clinics and nutrition education, assessments for young mothers and links to other services.
