New Leaders on Executive Staff
It was also a year of transition for the Health Department’s Executive Staff.
In January, Karen Holmes joined the Health Department as Director of Environmental Health Services. Ms. Holmes came to DuPage County from the Minnesota Department of Health, where she worked as the Environmental Health Supervisor for the Metro Unit in St. Paul. Ms. Holmes brought 20 years of experience in all aspects of environmental health practice and “a passion for promoting environmental health” as she told employees upon her arrival.
In 1999 she was appointed by Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. John Lumpkin to serve on the state task force on public health and safety aspects of bioterrorism.
In November, Stephen G. Hankamp joined the Health Department as Director of Behavioral and Mental Health Services. Mr. Hankamp holds a Master’s in Public Health from Saint Louis University and a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Michigan.
For most of 1999, William Coats, Associate Director of Behavioral Health Services, provided the needed guidance as Acting Director. August saw the departure of Mary Lou England who had served as Director of Community Health Services. Associate Director Jane Zimmerman stepped in to provide leadership in the role of Acting Director.
