Mold

What is mold?

Mold is a microscopic fungus that lives on plant or animal matter and produces large amounts of spores. These spores can be in the air we breathe, in the water we drink or carried by insects.

Where is mold found?

Molds are everywhere in our indoor and outdoor environment. High humidity levels, temperature, dampness, and poor ventilation are indoor factors that encourage mold growth.

What are the health effects of exposure to mold?

Respiratory problems are common, sometimes triggering asthma or rhinitis. Sensitivity to molds causes nasal congestion, eye irritation, wheezing, fever, and shortness of breath. People with chronic illness can develop mold infections in their lungs.

Why is it dangerous?

Spores are released into the air from moldy material that is disturbed or damaged. People that inhale these airborne spores can become seriously ill. Stachybotrys chartarum (SC) is one mold that is associated with health effects in people. Stachybotrys chartarum is greenish-black in color and grows on high cellulose content material, such as drywall sheetrock, dropped ceiling tiles, and wood. The conditions that encourage this mold growth are chronic moisture or water damage, due to excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, or flooding.

How can I reduce the problem of mold growth in my home?

  • Keep humidity levels between 30% to 60%.

  • Use an air-conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months. Be sure your home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms.

  • If you are planning to paint, it is recommended that you add mold inhibitors to paints before the application.

  • Thoroughly scrub all contaminated surfaces using a stiff brush, hot water and a non-ammonia soap/detergent or commercial cleaner if necessary. After cleaning has removed all visible mold a disinfectant may be used to kill mold missed by cleaning.

  • Carpeting in bathrooms and basements is not recommended.

  • And lastly, remove or replace previously soaked carpets and upholstery. (Discard either if not dried within 24 to 48 hours.)
