  • Lead

Site investigations for cases of elevated blood lead level are conducted by Environmental Health Services to identify sources of lead. Information is available about the health effects, identification and/or removal of lead from your home.

  • Radon

Radon is a class A carcinogen and the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. The Action Level, concentration at which it is recommended that steps be taken to reduce radon levels, has been set at 4 picocuries per liter of air by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety (IDNS) has found in a study (Radon Brochure) that 31% of homes tested in DuPage County have indoor radon level of 4 picocuries per liter of air or greater. It is recommended that everyone test their home for radon that lives below a 3rd story level and regardless of whether or not there is a basement.

We can provide information concerning radon and a coupon for a short-term radon test kit if you would like to test your home. The kit is purchased through the mail, you set up the kit as instructed, send the kit back as directed after the test is complete, and the results will be sent to you after analysis. If you choose to install a radon mitigation system it usually costs between $800 and $2,500.

For more information on Radon, go to the IDNS and the EPA Web sites for fact sheets on Radon.

  • Mold

Mold is a microscopic fungus that lives on plant or animal matter and produces large amounts of spores. These spores can be in the air we breathe, in the water we drink or carried by insects. High humidity levels, temperature, dampness, and poor ventilation are indoor factors that encourage mold growth. For more mold information see the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Web site.
