largest nonprofit organization addressing all aspects of mental
health and mental illness. This site offers information about
education, advocacy, research, service pertaining to mental illness.

The National Institute of Mental Health’s mission is to reduce the
burden of mental illness and behavioral disorders through research
on mind, brain and behavior. Available are numerous articles about
mental health news, research, clinical trials, etc.

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), formerly known
as the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association
(National DMDA), is the nation’s largest patient-directed,
illness-specific organization. Incorporated in 1986 and
headquartered in Chicago, National DMDA has a grassroots network of
more than 800 support groups. It is guided by a 65-member Scientific
Advisory Board comprised of the leading researchers and clinicians
in the field of mood disorders. National DMDA maintains a mail order
bookstore of pamphlets, books, and videos and will mail our
information on request.

The Medicine Program is an organization that was established by
volunteers dedicated to alleviating the dilemma of an
ever-increasing number of patients who cannot afford their
prescription medication. Offers assistance to patients who may
qualify to enroll in one or more
of the many patient assistance programs now available.

The Center for Mental Health Services Knowledge Exchange Network,
run by a section of the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, links to an amazing amount of information and programs
including children’s mental health, violence prevention, and suicide
prevention.
It includes information on many topics related to mental health and
its consumer section answers questions about obtaining help and how
to circumvent problems such as lack of funds. There are forums
dealing with school violence, the elderly, and employment (this
section even lists jobs available to those with a mental illness).

Mental Health Matters is a site primarily designed for consumers to
help them find resources on many subjects that come up during an
illness. There is everything from disorders and treatments to help
finding a therapist or support group. It also has links to advocacy
groups, legal assistance, and research programs.

Walkers Web is a site concerned with the mood disorders (bipolar
disorder and unipolar depression). Walkers in Darkness, the group
running the site, is an 11-year-old non-profit group. Their website,
although containing some basic information, is mostly intended to
be an online support system. There is a mood disorders mailing list,
as well as various forums and chat rooms (you must register for
these).

Mental Health Sanctuary is a good general site, which includes book
reviews, articles, online depression screening, personal stories,
and bulletin boards (one of which is just for teenagers with
depression or anxiety). Also has volunteers who will answer
questions and talk via

NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) DuPage is a site,
which contains information about various mental illnesses,
information about stigma, resources in the DuPage County area, as
well as numerous links pertaining to mental illness, including the
NAMI Illinois and National NAMI websites.

” Created in order to educate the public about mental health issues
and eradicate the fear, shame and stigma commonly associated with
mental illness, NMHAC has as its primary goal the development of a

HealthyPlace.com is the largest consumer mental health site,
providing comprehensive information on psychological disorders and
psychiatric medications from both a consumer and expert point of
view. They have active chat rooms, hosted support groups, people who
keep online journals/diaries, psychological tests, breaking mental
health news, mental health videos, online documentary films, a
mental health radio show and more.
