From the Executive Director...

Leland Lewis, B.S., M.B.A.

As I complete my first full year as Executive Director, I want to especially thank each employee for their support and dedication. This has been a year full of accomplishments for the Department, none of which could have been achieved without the hard work of each employee. I am very proud of the Department and look forward to the future with great excitement and anticipation. To our Community Partners, I also thank you for your cooperation and willingness to work together on the difficult issues that face public health in DuPage County. To the Board of Health and the County Board, I say a special thanks for your continued support and the trust and confidence you have placed in me by giving me the opportunity to serve the residents of DuPage County as Executive Director of the DuPage County Health Department.

The theme of the 55th Annual Report, “Laying the Foundation for the Next Decade”, is particularly appropriate as it emphasizes the main focus of much of our activity this past year – strategic planning. A baseline strategic plan has been developed from which we will work. The emphasis of the baseline strategic plan is an external focus in the community. In the next year, the external component will be reviewed and updated as necessary, and an internal operations component will be added. The main internal focus will be on outcomes.
Early in 2000, the Health Department finalized its first complete Mission, Vision and Values Statement, which was approved by the Board of Health. A single document containing all three items was developed and is prominently displayed in all Health Department facilities. A copy of the Mission, Vision and Values statement can be found on page two of this report. This statement will serve as the cornerstone on which the future direction of the Health Department will be based. We worked hard to develop a single department mission, a single set of values, a single concise vision, and one focused Health Department made up of a complex set of integrated services to reach a widely diverse clientele that is constantly changing.
This Annual Report highlights, in summary form, the services provided by the Health Department during the past year. The report will be placed on our web site for ease of access. Our web site has also been linked to many other web sites in the world of health to provide the user with a complete and comprehensive picture.
DuPage County is a wonderful place to live and work. It takes much hard work by many people from all walks of life to achieve the high quality of life we have in DuPage County. We thank all those who contribute every day to the enjoyment of life that we experience.

Leland Lewis, B.S., M.B.A.
