DUPAGE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO RESUME NORMAL OPERATIONS TUESDAY JAN. 7, 2014

Mon January 6, 2014

The DuPage County Health Department is open and operating tomorrow, Tuesday, January 7, 2014. Any appointments that were cancelled due to the Monday, January 6 closure, should call (630) 682-7400 to reschedule if you have not done so already.

Temperatures and wind-chill levels are expected to remain at frigid lows through Tuesday and residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe and healthy. Hypothermia and Frost bite can be real threats in this weather. View our Hypothermia and Frost Bite press release here.

Residents are also urged to take the following precautions recommended by the Centers of Disease Control (CDC):

· Work slowly when doing outside chores like shoveling. The cold air constricts the blood vessels and decreases oxygen to the heart, while the strenuous activity of shoveling can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure and heart rate. This combination could result in a heart attack. Those at higher risk of a heart attack during cold weather activities are:

o   Those with a prior heart attack

o   Those with known heart disease

o   Those with high cholesterol

o   Smokers

o   Those who lead a sedentary lifestyle

· Wear appropriate outdoor clothing; layers of light, warm clothing, mittens, hats, scarves and waterproof boots.

· Avoid drinking alcohol and hot caffeinated beverages to stay warm. These drinks actually make you colder. Drink hot chocolate or hot soup instead.

·Make sure you have a full tank of gas and an emergency kit in your car if you plan on going out. Your kit should include things like: cell phone charger, extra blankets and layers of clothing, water and good, batteries, flashlight, jumper cables, etc.
